• Irish haulage inspectors have set up a fre( phone number as part of a crackdown on unl censed operators by the Department of ti Environment.

Spokesman Ivor Geraghty says the respom to the phone line has been positive: "It's the onl way we can catch some hauliers because thf are outside the net and unknown to us unless A catch them at a roadside check."

The enforcement section has put 10 insper tors on the road with a presence in ever county, and extra staff are being promised 1 the unit in the coming months.

But Geraghty says that for now they are cm centrating on compliance and registration ratlif than prosecution: "Illegal haulage is a significar problem but we are dealing with it and the COff plaints hotline is working."

IRHA spokesman Gerry McMahon says: "We ar glad of the assistance. A 1999 report said ther could be as much as 20% of goods moved illegal! and it has not got any better in the meantime."
