II Hauliers in the North-West are demanding that police make spot checks on trucks and take tougher action to stop a massive wave of thefts in the region.

Geoff Parker, who runs Northwich-based Rambler Haulage says one load a week is stolen in Cheshire—he is urging the police to team up with Customs & Excise to fight the criminals.

His firm has had three recent thefts, losing loads of beer, soap powder and creosote, and knows of at least nine other trucks that have recently been stolen and abandoned without their loads. "Police should stop chock vehicles during non-woridng hours," he says, adding that Liverpool, and Vfrral are being hit particularly hard.

Other recent losers include Maghullbased Breeze Haulage and Northwich firm Francis Transport, which had £39.000 of cosmetics snatched.

Uverpool firm Transport Services has seen its insurance premiums rise 100% this year because of vehicle thefts.

As Commercial Motor went to press a group of local hauliers were due to meet with police, drivers and loss adjustors.
