As well as placing great emphasis on the human element in business, Sir Peter said that the secret of TNT's success and survival of the recession is flexibil ity. "You must be adaptable to the customer's needs and be one step ahead of the emerging customer needs." And this should extend to breaking new ground. "The door is always open for the transport innovator."

For the future, Sir Peter said that telecommunications will be of major importance. It's an area that's ripe for development. The computer terminal is now almost as ubiquitous as a telephone in the office."
