The plating and testing of goods vehicles is provided for the Goods Vehicles (Plating and :sting) Regulations 1971. In general :hides over 30 cwt unladen and ailers over 1 ton unladen must be ated and tested 12 months after first gistration and tested annually ereafter.

However, Schedule 2 of the egulations allows exemptions. Iragraph 15 exempts "vehicles conructed or adapted for, and used imarily for the purpose of carrying luipment permanently fixed to the flick which equipment is used for edical, dental, veterinary, health, lucational, display or clerical trposes, such use not directly volving the sale, hire, or loan of )ods from the vehicle.

It would appear that your vehicle, cause it is used for educational irposes, is exempt from plating and sting. You should confirm that this so with your Area Traffic Office. There are no weight limits laid twn for trailers which may be awn by unplated vehicles and your tnd Rover being both count.

However, under the Motor ;hides (Construction and Use) !gulations 1973 you may not use in neral a vehicle for a purpose for rich it is unsuited nor one which uld cause danger. It is incumbent you, therefore, to use the vehicle in reasonable manner with a trailer iich could not be considered to the engine capacity and braking efficiency of the Land Rover.

You would have to have regard to the Motor Vehicles (Variation of Speed Limits) Regulations 1973, however. The relevant part of these Regulations is Paragraph 1(4) of the Schedule.

This allows certain passenger vehicles and dual-purpose vehicles to be driven at 50 mph when certain conditions are fulfilled. The vehicles covered are: Where the vehicle is a motor car adapted to carry not more than seven passengers, exclusive of the driver, or which has an unladen weight not exceeding 30 cwt and is adapted to carry more than seven passengers, exclusive of the driver, or which has an unladen weight not exceeding 30 cwt and is adapted to carry more than seven passengers, exclusive of the driver, andis drawing one trailer. The conditions are: That the kerbside weight and the maximum gross weight must be dis played on the vehicle and trailer respectively and that a disc with the number "50" on it should be displayed to the rear. In addition, if the trailer is a braked load-carrying trailer, its laden weight should not exceed the kerbside weight of the drawing vehicle. If these conditions are not complied with, then the speed limit is 40 mph.
