PROBABLY more of interest to the transport engineer and student than to the average operator. Vehicle operating costs in transport studies by Clive Daniels, produced by the Economist Intelligence Unit, is priced at a daunting £20.

Nevertheless, to the operator who is interested in costing and who is not put off by the price it postulates some unusual viewpoints about cost factors.

For instance, in considering fuel consumption, the publication suggests that it is more convenient for analytical purposes to work in gallons per mile or litres per kilometre to the power of ten thus producing a scale of gallons per 100 miles.

Basically, the publication demonstrates the importance of road vehicle cost factors in planning road development and the effect of the provision of particular types of roads on vehicle costs. It is based on the work of the ETU in Africa and although a parallel can be drawn to conditions in the United Kingdom, direct comparison is difficult.

The publication is available from the Economist Intelligence Unit, Spencer House, 27 St James's Place, London SW1A 1NT.
