Malcolm J. Arnold has been appointed director/gm of Abel Carriers (1954) Ltd, the warehousing and distribution company which serves Wales, based at Welshpool. Mr Arnold was previously a divisional distribution manager with C.P.C. (United Kingdom) Ltd.

Derek H. Wilks will succeed P. J. Harmer as company secretary of Southdown on April 7. Mr Harmer becomes General Manager with South Wales Transport, Mr Wilks is group chief accountant with Western Motor Holdings of Plymouth.

Roland B. Wade becomes regional technical officer, Eastern region, NBC. He is at present engineering planning officer of United Automobile Services.

John D. Ledger is leaving the East Kent Road Car Company to become assistant secretary of the West Yorkshire Road Car Company. David J. R. Bending, chief assistant traffic manager with Crosville, becomes traffic manager at Southdown Motor Services on April 1. He succeeds M. Rourke, traffic manager (designate) at Western National.

T. J. Warburton, previously BRS Parcels traffic assistant at Basingstoke, becomes Bridgwater branch manager.

Michael Edwards, 44, chief executive of the Chloride Group, is The Guardian's Young Businessman of the Year and will receive his award — a piece of decorated silver — from the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Mr Healey, at a Mansion House luncheon on March 26, Chloride's profits were four times higher last year than they were in 1970.

George W. Judson has joined bodywork specialist Reeve Burgess Ltd, of Pilsley, nr Chesterfield, as general sales manager/director designate. He was previously director of special services with Pengco Transport Systems Ltd. Sir Jack Callard, chairman of ICI, has been inducted into Honorary Fellowship of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

J. E. Barber has been appointed projects manager of the Ministry projects division of Fodens, responsible for all aspects of negotiations and contractual work with Ministry departments.

Obituaries

We record with regret the deaths of Alexander Lamb and John Pollock. • Mr Lamb was with Stirlingbased haulier William Dunn; in the late Fifties and early Sixties he served on the RHA Scottish area committee and the old road-rail negotiating committee.

Mr Pollock, of Robert Pollock & Sons of Maryhill, was well known among tipper men in Glasgow and the West of Scotland. He served one term on the Scottish area committee of the RHA.
