Glasgow in the red -but better than expected

ALTHOUGH it is well in the red, Greater Glasgow Passenger Transport Authority had a considerably better year than expected. That is one conclusion made in the annual report of the PTE for 19731974 which was published last week. The total deficit was E 188,000 less than predicted.
During the same period over half the PTE's operating staff left, states the report.
The PTE's budget for the Year June I. 1973 to May 31. 1974 anticipated an operating deficit of £626.000. and a total deficit of [1,909.000. Comparison between actual and predicted results is complicated by the difference in time base as the actual accounts are from June I. 1973 to May 15, 1974. Losses actually made over this period were £438.000 and t 1,490.000. During the time covered by the report the PTE was hit by recurring shortages of staff, vehicles. and parts. An interesting point made is the lack of success in recruiting women bus drivers despite a special advertising campaign.
The report paints a brighter picture when it turns to the problems caused by traffic congestion. Apparently this is now a lessening problem for the PTE and they are hopeful that the introduction of further measures including contra flow bus lanes will further improve the Position.
Experiments with computer controlled traffic signals are also under way, the report mentions.
