taken into the Crewe area by A. Pearson (Transport), Ltd., Nantwich, from Chester, Liverpool and Stoke, had abstracted traffic from established furniture removers, the North Western Deputy Licensing Authority, Mr. J. R. Lindsay, was told last week. Hunt's Removals, Ltd., Crewe, and J. Latham and Sons (Carriers), Ltd., Crewe, were opposing Pearson's application for a new A licence for three vans.

Mr. J. Edward Jones, for Pearson's. said they had been forced to make the application because the vehicles weighed more than the amount permitted on the special A licence, through changes in the ordinary course of maintenance. • Mr. P. Roberts, a director, said the weight increases amounted to approximately 10 cwt. on the first vehicle, 5 cwt. on the second, and although there was no increase as far as the third was concerned, they wanted to deal with them all There had been no alteration in the carrying capacity, and no change of work was contemplated.

A representative of Hunt's Removals said the work being done by the applicants, since, they came into the area in 1956, was abstracted from established removers.' In 1954-55, Hunt's turnover averaged £17,000 a year, and out of more than 1.200 vehicle-days in each year there

was an average of 239 idle. In 1956 their turnover dropped to £14,700 with 301 idle days, and in 1957 to £13,000 with

329 idle days. Pearson's were taking traffic from everyone else and, although Hunt's were only B-licence operators, they strongly opposed a grant.

Mr. Lindsay granted the application with the normal user amended to "furniture, radio and electrical equipment and foodstuffs, Great Britain," instead of "general goods, Great Britain." An application to add a condition to their B licence of "furniture and household effects as required" was withdrawn.
