OVERDRIVE FOR BEDFORD' VAN
AN epicycIic auxiliary gear which gives . overdrive On all gearbox ratiok can : now be fitted . to Bedford -CA vans-. and station wagons with the Vauxhall' Victor engine .. and gearbox. . (April,. 1957, onwards).The overdrive gear, known as the Handa, costs £58, plus £7 10s. for fitting. It is produced by Vehicle Developments, Ltd., 60 Balcombe Street, London, N.W.1.
The gear, which is attached to the back of the main gearbox,is engaged by ii small vacuum servo, actuated by a knob on the instrument panel. It gives overall, ratios of 14, 6.5 and 4 to 1, in addition to the standard ratios of 18.7, 8.64 and 5.28"to 1. It should provide ,a, higher maximum speed, better fuel consumption and a lOWer rate of engine wear.
FARE RISE NOT WANTED .
AN objection has been lodged by Hudson's Bus Co., Ltd., Horncastle, Lines, to the East Midland Traffic Commissioners' proposal to vary the company's licences on three routes. This would raise their fares to the level charged by the Lincolnshire Road Car Co., Ltd.
Hudson's, a family concern, claim that they are making a profit on the three routes—Lincoln-Horncastle via Bardney, Lincoln-Hotneastle via Stainfield, and Lincoln-Skegness.
MORE BUS CUTS THREATENED "1"HE point has now.been reached where the public must expect even More drastic reductions in bus services unless the Government relieve operators of the fuel tax. This was stated at a Press con.ference in London last night by the Public 'Transport Association, Municipal' Passenger Transport Association, Passenger Vehicle Operators Association and Scottish Road Passenger Transport Association.

FOUR B.U.T. single-decker trolleybus chassis have been exported to Coimbra Portugal tobe fitted with locally built bodies 3'3 ft. 6 in. long. They incorporate B.T.H. traction equipment, Westinghouse braking, and a,. petrolenginesdriven dynamo for terminal manoeuvring; Coimbra already operate
B.U.T. vehicles.
_Later this year, 20 similar chassis will be sent to Oporto.
