who allowed one of his r-Itirivers to work for 28+ hours without rest was fined a total of £52 at Selby, Yorks, on Monday. He was Charles W. Boddy, Camblesforth, who was accused of permitting the man to work too long and of failing to produce records.

Mr. E.. Wurzal, prosecuting for the Yorkshire Licensing Authority, said the driver, Thomas Shaw, began his driving at 7.30 a.m. one day and did not finish until noon the next. However, his driving records showed that he worked only 10 hours. Boddy had taken a most obstructive attitude towards the authorities, he added.

In court, Boddy claimed that he had no control over drivers when they left his depot. The time-sheets were not correct because men often altered them to increase their pay hours. At first he refused to pay the fine on the hours charges, but the magistrates warned him that the alternative was a month's imprisonment. Boddy was also ordered to pay £10 10s. advocate's fee.

Shaw was fined a total of 110 for . driving without sufficient rest and for failing to keep proper records. The man who reported the offences, Norman Lewis, was himself fined a total of £24 on similar charges. He told the court that he had been dismissed by Boddy and he thought this was because he had refused to work beyond the maximum hours.

LEWINS TO BE MADE IN GERMANY

THE Lewin sweeper is to be made in 1 Germany by the Haller company of Stuttgart. It is hoped that the first appliance to be built there will be marketed in September.

There is no German machine similar to the Lewin, and six were ordered from England by the Essen municipal authorities. This caused Brockhouse (Trading Facilities), Ltd., to conclude an agreement with Haller, who will sell the appliance in Germany and Austria.

The Lewin mechanical street orderly may also eventually be offered in Germany with the sweeper.
