Principal Exhibits :—Light Delivery Van ; Motorcab.

On this stand a tocwt. van and a motorcab are to be seen. The cab has been built to meet the requirements of the Metropolitan Police regulations in all respects, and the vehicle may Ix_ -easily turned in a circle 25 feet in diameter, on both locks, as specified in these regulations. The conditions of cab service require that the mechanism and control shall be as simple as possible; that a minimum amount of damage can be done through careless -driving ; that the system of lubrication shall be automatic; that the engine shall be of sufficient power to do practically all its work when in top gear; and that all parts shall be accessible and easily removable for repairs. That it should be quiet, reliable, and economical are, also, essential points. The makers of the " Leader " cab claim to have fulfilled all these conditions, and

the vehicle certainly is not a pleasure vehicle converted for business purposes.

The principal dimensions arc : wheel base, 7 feet; wheel-gauge, 5 feet 71 inches; and length overall, to feet to inches. The engine has four vertical cylinders, 8omm. diameter in the bore, and with a piston-stroke of oomm. All valves are mechanically operated, and the lubrication is effected under air pressure. The pressure is kept up by an air-pump which is fixed on the steering column as shown in our illustra tion of the forward part of this vehicle. The engine develops to-t2h.p. at normal speed. The thermo-syphon system of cooling is employed, the deliverypipe from the top of the cylinders discharging into a small water vessel on the top of the radiator as may he seen. This vessel and its connections are normally hidden by a leather dash.

The driver sits by the side of the bonnet, the space at his left hand being reserved for luggage. The gear-box provides for three speeds forward and one speed reverse. The clutch is of the leather-faced cone type. The brakes are metal-to-metal expanding, with blocks of phosphor-bronze and drums of malleable iron. The side brakes are compensated, and all are protected by metal cases in order to keep out mud and dust. Every part of the chassis has been standardised, and " spares " can be supplied within a few hours after receipt of order. The vehicle has

been constructed to the designs of Mr. Ben H. Morgan, and is built at Nottingham it is of British manufacture throughout.
