Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Exhibits : -One Chassis; one Van ; 55-40h.p, Engine.

The 2-ton chassis shown on this stand has a 2-cylinder vertical engine, 5 inches bore, and with a piston-stroke of 51 inches. This engine develops 20h.p. at ,000r.p.m. The waterjackets are of such a length that the piston rings, during the stroke, do not pass beyond the water-cooled portion of the barrel, All half-time and pumpdriving gear is enclosed, and runs in oil. A direct gear-driven pump is bolted on to the outer wall of the oil sump, from which it draws the oil for delivery to the various bearings. There is a spring-loaded relief valve in the main service pipe, and a gauge on the dashboard indicates the pressure at which the oil is being fed. The whole lubricating system is entirely automatic, and is not dependent on the skill of the driver, whilst the oil pressure-gauge is the only fitting on the dash-board. The engine is governed by a centrifugal governor, which, it is claimed, will act at any speed between zoo and moon r.p.m. according to the position of the

control lever. Low-tension SimmsBosch ignition is fitted.

The clutch is of the leather-faced cone type, but the leather is riveted to the periphery of the male portion, in sections, the object of this being to facili

ate renewals. Flat springs are fitted, at intervals, between the leather and the clutch face, so as to allow of a gradual and easy engagement of the clutch. The change-speed gear-box gives three speeds forward, and one speed reverse. The wheels are always in mesh and are operated by a Daimler

pattern gate-change lever. All the gear changes are effected by dog clutches which, together with all working parts of the gear-box, are running in oil.

The differential, of the bevel gear type, has ball-thrust bearings and is in the same case as the change-speed gear, the whole being held up at three points. The drive from the countershaft to back axle is through Hans Renold roller chains, the inside surfaces of the chain rings forming brake drums in which the expanding brake blocks, operated by a side lever and compensated, make their bearing contact. In addition to the side-lever brake, there is a footoperated brake acting on a drum on the propeller shaft.

A 2-ton van is also exhibited, and of this we give two views herewith. A 35-4oh.p., 4-cylinder engine, of the same cylinder dimensions as those of the smaller engine, is fitted to the 2-ton chassis, which is a workmanlike job in all parts. These vans are doing good work in various quarters.
