• The Road Haulage Association has clawed its way back from a period of serious losses to finish 2000 in the black.
In a marked reversal of fortunes, the association finished 2000 with a post-tax surplus of £229,015—a far cry from the 0580,000 loss announced for 1999. The turnaround was due in part to savings in staff costs (down by more than £187,000 in 2000) and increased income from membership (up by £400,000 compared with 1999).
There was also a significant saving on exceptional items, as the 1999 results carried a E135,000 write-off against office equipment and the closure of the Westminster office established by former director general Stephen Norris.
The new results bring to an end a two-year run of financial difficulty for the RNA, which plunged into the red in 1999 under Norris's leadership, finishing that year with a deficit of well over 0600,000.
New national chairman Bob Russett says of the results: "We're a leaner, fitter organisation now than we were. We've had a couple of tricky years, but new we're back on an even keel."
