Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Keywords : Gosport, Copybook, G, Water

Bird's Eye View By The Hawk

" THE road problem is a financial onc."—Mr. Wallace E. Riche, chairman of the Roads Improvement Alsocialion, at the Association's annual meeting last week. it is my job to get the roads built as quickly as possible; and the question of finance does not enter into that particular problem."—Mr. Harold Watkinson, Minister of Transport, in the Houseof Commons last week. Perhaps Mr. Riche and Mr. Watkinson could agree among themselves why 'road progress is so slow.

It's Life

ANOTHER film depicting love, hate and intrigue in road haulage is to be launched later this year. I am told that one of its most memorable shots is of the enigmatic expression on the face pf a munching cow which narrowly misses a death worse than fate when its privacy is invaded by a lorry without brakes. The lack of brakes is probably connected with competition for the favours of a girl in a café. I look forward to seeing the cow.

For His Copybook

FOLLOWING his comments in The Commercial Motor I on May 24 about the value of advertising, one of the parcels groups of British Road Services has sent Janus some examples of its publicity blotters. For his copybook, I suspect.

Sea Water for Snow

THE other day, Mr. E. A. Hart, managing director of Cleansing Service (Southern Counties), Ltd., Batley, was telling me how effective sea water was for melting snow. He discovered this at Gosport, where after a snowfall he sent gully-emptiers to take on loads of sea water which they discharged liberally in the kcal streets. Next morning Gosport's streets were clear, whereas in the surrounding area the roads were thick with snow.

The company have now designed spray bars, so that sea water can be sprayed on the Hampshire roads when snow' falls. Because of the distance involved it is necessary to be more economical with the water than in Gosport, where it is discharged through the rear valve.

Looking for Help

I AM sorry to hear that my old friend E. H. B. Palmer, who was one of the first men to set up in business as a transport consultant and advocate in licensing cases, has had a stroke. His right arm and leg are incapacitated and he is finding it difficult to carry on.

Fortunately, his speech and brain are unaffected, but he is seeking a 'partner to help him out.

They Also Move

WIT, as well as enterprise, has been shown by P. W. Archer and Son, Ltd., Northallerton, in seeking furniture-removal business. They have bought a trailer which they use as a mobile office at North Yorkshire markets. Their slogan is. "We are also on the move."

Hugging Their Chains

'FUDGING by the number of " 20 " plates still to be seen j on lorries, operators have grown to like their chains. But as there are about 140,000 to be removed, perhaps the delay is understandable.
