DESP1TE drastic economy, 51 per cent. of the stage services operated by the North Western Road Car Co., Ltd., are run at a loss, and the position is growing worse. In mileage, 35 per cent, is unremunerative.
These facts were put before the North Western Traffic Commissioners at Stockport, last Friday, when the company applied to continue frequency cuts which were instituted during the Suez crisis an 53 of their stage-carriage services.
The cuts were mainly in Cheshire and Derbyhire, and objecting councils included Wilmslow, Cheadle and Gatley, Bollington, Congleton, Milnrow, Saddleworth, Longdendale and Chapel-en-le-Frith.
Mr. W. Blackhurst, for the company. said censuses had shown that the continuation of journey cuts was justified, as the services now provided were adequate. In some cases they had contemplated applying to reduce frequencies before the emergency. Good
paying services were included in the pro7 posal, because of slackness at non-peak times.
Referring to the proposal to cut the frequency on the Manchester-Alderley route from 10 to 15 minutes at offpeaks. except Saturdays, the chairman. Mr. F. Williamson, said this was an important service. Before agreeing, the Commissioners would take independent observations of loading by their own traffic staff.
Mr. John Green, North Western traffic manager, said the revision would save 2,219 mites a week and was an important part of their application.
The application respecting services between Macclesfield and Crewe. Macclesfield Congleton, Altrincham Macclesfield. Chartesworth Mottram, Macclesfield-Wilmslow and Macclesfield-Bollington were granted. The hearing will continue at Stockport on June 28.
