, RkCTOR ATTACKS SUNDAY • HAULAGE WORK

A.N attack on Sunday lorry driving r‘ is made by the Rev. F. L. Wyman, rector of St. Paul's Church, York, in the Tune issue of his parish magazine. " There are great numbers [lorries] tearing along every Sunday, as though the life of the firm they represent is dependent upon the Sunday desecration," he 'writes. "In this we have witnessed a slow but sure incoming of a tide." Mr. William Bridge, head of Flower's Transport, York, and chairman of the West Riding Area of the Road Haulage Association, told The Commercial Motor that he thought many drivers worked on Sundays because they received double pay. There was, he said, more Sunday working by British Road Services than under private enterprise. He believed that drivers should 'have Sundays off wherever possible, although perishable and seasonal traffic had to be Moved on this day as well as•on any other. " Sunday working is • not, I think, essential even on trunk routes, as lorries can in many cases start their journeys at midnight on Sundays," he added.
