Sleepmasters’ Euro-5 Fuso Canter transports a custom built ‘racing bed’ to the Great Knaresborough Bed Race It was a delivery day with a difference when Sleepmasters driver Paul Foulds set off for the North Yorkshire town of Knaresborough – the bed in the back of his Fuso Canter was designed not to give a restful night’s sleep, but to race around the town’s historic streets and across the River Nidd!
Paul and the Canter were spending a day supporting six members of the Skylarks netball team, from neighbouring Harrogate, as they took part in the annual Great Knaresborough Bed Race. And the Canter proved the ideal vehicle to transport the custom-built ‘racing bed’ to the start line.
The Great Knaresborough Bed Race is a famous and long-established event in the local calendar, and has featured on network television, in national newspaper stories and even on a Japanese TV game show! The 2011 event attracted crowds of 25,000.
The Skylarks joined 89 other teams, first on a fancydress parade through the town and then on the race itself – a hilly three-mile course finishing with a swim across the Nidd – and were cheered all the way by the hordes of spectators.
The team raised an estimated £1,500 for children’s charity Starlight, while the race, organised by the Knaresborough Lions group, generated in the region of £100,000 for a variety of causes. “We were delighted to be able to support such a worthwhile and entertaining event," says Sleepmasters logistics director Mark Harrison. "It was a fantastic day out and raised a truly impressive amount for charity. Hats off to the organisers, and to the brave souls who took part in the race.”
