By Laura Hailstone THE INDUSTRY’S ight for a fair deal on fuel prices has been given a boost with a pledge from Tory MP Robert Halfon to be the FairFuelUK champion in the House of Commons.

Backed once again by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) and the Road Haulage Association (RHA), the FairFuelUK campaign made headlines earlier this week as a group of MPs, spearheaded by Halfon, pushed a FairFuelUK branded car along Whitehall as a publicity stunt to kick-start phase two of the campaign. The MPs then handed a letter into No10, calling for an inquiry into why pump prices appear not to fall in line with falling oil prices and for a delay or abandonment of the planned January rise on fuel duty (set to add as much as 4ppl to fuel).

Halfon tells CM his intention is to become ‘Mr FairFuel MP’ in the House of Commons and has already formed a FairFuelUK AllParty Parliamentary Group, with 22 MPs signed up as members.

“Motorists and hauliers are being cruciied by high fuel costs so I’m leading on this issue to urge the government not to increase fuel taxes next January and also to put pressure on the oil companies to pass down lower fuel costs to the motorist,” says Halfon.

FTA chief executive Theo de Pencier says: “FairFuelUK has over 150 MPs supporting it now, so a backbench group that can maintain interest on the backbenches is terriic.” Kate Gibbs, head of communications at the RHA, adds: “We have got to keep up the momentum because we cannot see any further increase in fuel duty. As soon as we get some sort of stability with the price of fuel, then we will see some stability being achieved in the industry.” • www.fairfuelUK.com
