THE CLOSURE OF the News of the World will slash DHL’s volumes with News International by more than two million newspapers a week.

Following days of phone hacking allegations, News International ceased production of its 168-year-old tabloid Sunday publication on 10 July. This is likely to hit revenues at logistics giant DHL Supply Chain, which manages the distribution of the title.

DHL was awarded a ive-year multi-million pound contract with News International to handle distribution of The Sun, The Times, News of the World and The Sunday Times in November 2009, from a hub in Edmonton, north London.

A spokeswoman for DHL says: “This is a rapidly changing situation and it would be inappropriate to speculate on what impact this may have on our business.” As part of the logistics contract, DHL delivers 25 million newspapers each week from four print plants to 68 wholesalers across England and Wales. Of the weekly consignments, 2,812,005 are News of the World newspapers.
