GOVERNMENT STATISTICS show that van traffic has grown by more than any road vehicle type during the last decade.

The Department for Transport's Survey of Van Activity 2004 reveals that van traffic has grown by more than 30% over the last decade, compared with increases of 15% in cars and 20% in HGV traffic, In 2004, company vans travelled a total of 33,812 million vehicle-kilometres. Nearly a third (32%) of travel represents trips between home and work, with a further quarter (24%) attributed to travelling between jobs.

Only 3% of the distance travelled is for personal use.The peak periods of travel during the week are, as is to be expected, at rush hours — between 7am and 9am as well as 4pm to 6pm, during which time around 30% of vans are believed to be in use, The construction industry accounts for about a third (31%) of vehicle kilometres, while the wholesale and retail sector are responsible for a fifth (21%).
