Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A HIGH-POWER 4x2 tractive unit with a comprehensive standard specification has been added to the MAN British range. The 19.361 FLTS combines the highest-ever standard specification offered on a MAN tractive unit in Britain, air-suspension for the drive axle and the latest MAN engine developments.

The 19.361 was first shown in left hand drive form at the Frankfurt Show in September 1983. Right hand drive production models are now with British MAN-VW dealers. More than 1,200 have already been delivered to European customers. MAN in Munich says that currently half of all tractor orders over 280 bhp are for this model.

The existing line of MAN engine development using chargecooling and pressure-charging to create high torque characteristics with low specific fuel consumption, continues on the 19.361.

Air suspension on the drive axle, as standard, is the first step in a programme to advance improved suspension ride and maintenance characteristics.

The D2866 KF engine fitted in the 19.361 is a bored-out development of the D2566 MKF engine already in serviece in British MAN vehicles. Engine size has been increased from 11.41 litres to 11.97 litres by increasing the bore from 125 mm to 128 mm while retaining the same stroke of 155 mm.

At the same time the cylinder head has been re-designed with four-hole direct fuel injection into a pan-shaped combustion chamber, replacing the current 'M' system which has single hole injection into a spherical cavity. The engine developes 356 bhp at 2,200 rpm and 1,106 lb ft of torque at 1,200-1,600 rpm (net installed to BSAU 141a).

The tuned induction resonance system, already applied to the 276 and 315 hp net in line six engines is also applied to the new higher output engine. The blowing capacity of the turbocharger is boosted by precisely shaped pipes — delivering cooled, oxygen-rich air to two plenum chambers.

These pulses of preciselytimed air charges are most effective at low engine speeds, boosting torque where simple turbocharging is at its least effective. At higher speeds the tuned induction cycle goes out of phase with the valves, but this reduces excessive turbocharging pressure and reduces peak cylinder pressures.

In practice, the engine delivers maximum torque across a high, wide and flat-topped torque curve from 1,200 to 1,600 rpm.

Although specific fuel consumption savings, with steadystate loads, may be as low as three per cent, on the road savings could be higher because the engine can work at maximum torque across a wide speed range. Therefore downshifting for hill climbing or acceleration can be reduced, leading to better fuel consumption figures.

The MAN front axle is fitted with parabolic leaf springs and an anti-roll bar. At the rear MAN's own full air suspension is fitted.

Under normal operating conditions, with up to a 13 ton load on the rear axle, the air suspension system will be under 6 bar pressure, going up to 10 bar when cornering.

The twin bunk sleeper cab has an independent cab heater, heated driver's seat, heated rear view mirrors, headlamp washwipe, electrically operated passenger window, air dam with integral fog lights, driver's wardrobe, pneumatic suspension seats with armrests and head restraints, and a tinted laminated windscreen.

The 19.361 is fitted with a ZF 16S-160 Ecosplit 16-speed synchromesh with overdrive box and a Fichtel and Sachs 420 mm diameter single dry plate clutch. A MAN 13-tonne H713120 hub reduction axle with a 4.04:1 ratio as standard.

The new model is designed around the existing 3.5 m wheelbase chassis configuration used in the 321 models with conventional pressed-steel channel section side members and bolted and riveted crossmembers.

The 19.361 FLTS weighs 6,542 kg (4,471 kg front, 2,071 kg rear) unladen with oil, water, 25 litres of fuel, and tools included but with no fifth wheel.

Dual circuit, full air, with Scam auto adjustment, spring park brake and exhaust brake are standard.

The list price of the 19.361 FLTS is £33,950.
