• A Doncaster haulier who was granted a transitional 0 licence in 1970 without a fleet inspection or attending a public inquiry had "outgrown himself" in the subsequent years. This was said at a public inquiry in Leeds on Wednesday when Thomas Bridges, of Doncaster, had his 0 licence, originally authorizing eight vehicles and two trailers, more than halved by the Yorkshire LA, Maj-Gen Sir John Potter, who removed four vehicles and two trailers.

Mr Bridges had been called before the LA under Section 69 following the examination of five vehicles in March and May this year.

Mr D. E. Lane, DoE vehicle examiner, said that of the five vehicles examined one was issued with an immediate GV9 and two others with defect notices. As Mr Bridges had no proper maintenance facilities nor premises it had been necessary to examine all five vehicles at the roadside outside his home.

Mr Lane added that on earlier visits no maintenance records could be produced other than invoices.

Representing Mr Bridges — who had told the court his vehicles were inspected weekly Mr Grayham Platt said that his client had spent £2000 on purchasing a plot of land on which he intended to erect suitable premises. His client now fully understood the 0 licensing requirements.
