ssues half-grant only

• Northern Ireland Trailers (Scotland) Ltd applied in Glasgow last week for 160 railers to be acquired for use on the rdrossan, Larne, Belfast roll-on/roll-off tun.

The firm held a licence for eight vehicles nd 12 trailers, Mr James Law said, and has ad an excellent record and the only uestion now arising was whether the ompany had facilities to look after 160 sailers. They were a separate company in the Ferrymasters Group which operated at reston, Stoke, Bristol and in the Vletropolitan area. There would be a few railers in the Ardrossan depot at any given ime. All trailers would be checked regularly n and out of Ireland and at Ardrossan they tow had extended premises to cope with the fdditional business. They had appointed a leet engineer to operate in Scotland and

Ardrossan would double check the Northern Ireland checks.

Mr H. R. Aylmer, the deputy Scottish LA, said that he was satisfied but he granted a licence for 80 trailers only. Mr Law said that without the full number of trailers required for the plan now envisaged it would be impossible to operate the service. Mr Aylmer said that he still thought he should exercise prudence and grant 80 trailers until satisfied that the maintenance facilities and staff were adequate. Mr Law said that that opportunity had been offered to the Department by letter but had not been taken up. If a 50 per cent grant were made he would have to advise his clients to apply again immediately for a further 80 trailers. Mr Aylmer agreed that he was free to do so but adhered to his decision.
