Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THERE should be no further fares increases on Ulster Transport Authority buses, according to the recommendation of Mr. Werner Wolfgang Heubeck, new managing director of the Authority's road passenger transport services.

Mr. Heubeck said in Belfast last week that he envisaged a freeze in fares rather than a reduction. As the undertaking was making a loss, fares could not be reduced until running costs were lowered. His investigations had shown that a reduction in fares might be possible within one or two years at the most.

A feeder service to the railways would also be supplied by the buses, said Mr.. Heubeck. As long as they had the railways they must make use of them. There was no point in buses and trains splitting the number of passengers available.

New Authority A new road passenger transport company is to be set up in Northern Ireland to supersede the UTA, with Mr. Sidney Catherwood as chairman-designate. Mr. Catherwood (aged 36) is a director of H.A.C. Catherwood and Sons Ltd.

Mr. Arthur Algeo continues as chairman of the UTA in the new interim Board announced by the Minister of Development, Mr. William Craig, pending the introduction of legislation for the reorganization.
