Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

rr HE South Eastern Traffic Commis1 sioners last week granted an application by Southern Vectis Omnibus Co. Ltd. to run a stage carriage service between Shanklin Railway Station and Ventnor Town Hall, when the Shanklin-to-Ventnor section of the railway line from Ryde Pier is closed.

There were objections from the Isle of Wight County Council and the SandownShanklin and Ventnor Urban District Councils.

The commissioners also granted unopposed applications by Southern Vectis to run stage carriage services between Ryde Pier and West Hill Road, Cowes; between Ryde Town Hall and Blackgang Hotel; and between Seafield Road, Seaview, and Ventnor Town Hall.

But they refused applications by E. H. Greinage and Son Ltd. and A. H. Randall and Sons, both of Ventnor, to run express carriage services between Ventnor and Ryde Esplanade. when the Shanklin-toVentnor line is closed. British Railways and Southern Vectis objected.

Appearing for the applicants. Mr. A. L. Lowth protested that Ventnor would be the "poor sister" if the applications failed. Holidaymakers wishing to go to Ventnor would have to take their chance with the thousands of people going to Shanklin to stay and they would be in an even worse position when they went home, because Shanklin people would be at the railway station first.

Mr. Lowth asked: What could be more simple than to let the people get on coaches at Ryde and go straight to Ventnor? Numerous people went to Ventnor for their holidays and the figures showed very heavy loadings on 13 Saturdays during the summer season.
