Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WHAT the South Eastern Licensing Authority, Maj.-Gen. A. F. J. Elmslie, called "a lenient view" was taken when four road operators came before him at Eastbourne on Wednesday to show cause why their licences should not be revoked, suspended or curtailed.

Mr. Walter Mitchell of Bumthill, Dunsford, Godalming, said that a lorry on which a prohibition order had been served last November was being scrapped and he had bought another to replace it. He gave an undertaking that this vehicle, and another one he owned, would be inspected and necessary repairs done every four weeks. The LA ordered a suspension of the new vehicle for one week from January 31.

A similar suspension order was made in the case of Mr. J. Boniface, of Eastbourne, the defects on whose lorry when stopped by an examiner last October were described by Maj.-Gen. Elmslie as "pretty serious". An undertaking was given by Mr. Boniface to have the vehicle inspected regularly every month.

Mr. R. A. George, of Brighton, a mobile fruiterer, said he had not used his vehicle since the prohibition order was made in November. He was told that there would be a week's suspension of the vehicle from the day it was made fit for the road again.

A suspension of two weeks from January 31 was ordered in respect of a lorry owned by Mr. C. 0. Baker, of East Oakley, Basingstoke, on which a number of defects were found when it was stopped in October.

Mr. George Owen Baker, son of the owner, gave an undertaking that in future all their six vehicles would be inspected every six weeks.

In ordering the suspension, the LA said it was high time that the firm got themselves organized to deal efficiently with vehicle maintenance.
