Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

NiTAIN reasons for the decline in Oa takings on the bus route between Pateley Bridge and Colley were that more farmers had private ears and gave other people lifts,, Mr. A. Wray, manager of A. Wray and Sons, Ltd., told the Yorkshire Licensing Authority last week. Mr. B. flowcroft; licensing officer of the West Yorkshire Road Car Co., Lid., applied to withdraw the company's market-day services between Ottcy and Blubberho uses. It was proposed that Wray's Pateley Bridge-Otley service be re-routed to cover areas which West Yorkshire sought to abandon. West Yorkshire buses, said Mr. Howcroft, travelled 11,143 miles on the Otley-Blubberhouses route in a. year and lost Sid. a mile. "Mr. Wray has in mind the surrendering of his licence for the rout q unless means can be found, not of making the service remunerative—that would be

impossible—but of cutting the loss," stated Mr. Howeroft. "It cannot be in the interests of the public that two companies should operate unremunerative services over the same area when by a system of co-ordination the main points could be covered."

He added that to bring fares on the present West Yorkshire service up to the level of costs a 75-per cent. increase would be necessary.

f,5,000 FOR WEIGHBRIDGE TESTER?

ASUM of £5,000 is proposed to be spent by Manchester Watch Committee on a specially equipped vehicle to test weighbridges. Twenty-six northwestern weights and measures authorities have agreed on the principle of a regional weighbridge testing scheme, by which Manchester would provide a modern testing unit and hire it to other authorities.

Each authority has been asked to any days state how m a year it would

require testing equipment.
