WI4EN M. Hawkins, Ltd., Felton, " Northumberland, applied to the Northern Licensing Authority on Monday for an A licence for five vehicles, evidence was given of an alleged transport shortage in the district because of sales of vehicles from the Felton depot of British Road Services.

The head of the concern is Mr. N. Birkley, who formerly managed the depot. Customers looked to him to provide vehicles, he said, but his company had only three under A licence. He had taken over a contract from B.R.S. for the Milk Marketing Board and this required two vehicles daily. Four B.R.S. vehicles used to be hired to him, but these had now been sold.

Transport for livestock was particularly lacking. B.R.S. had 10 livestock vehicles at Felton until. December 4, 1954,

Eight farmers gave supporting evidence. One, who conld no longer obtain B.R.S. vehicles, spoke of walking stock to the markets.

The railways, B.R.S, and. four local hauliers objected. They submitted that a B licence limited to the carriage of milk and livestock would meet the need.

The Authority said that he could not deal with the application on the basis of vehicles sold by B.R.S. If he did, it would make a farce of denationalization. He granted an A licence for two vehicles, and said that if urgent need arose, a short-term licence could be issued.
