Pyrene Fire Extinguishers.

It is interesting to note that quite a number of London cab companies are fitting the Pyrene fire extinguisher to the machines which they operate ; this is well known to our readers. The illustration which we reproduce will show the accessible position in which it is being fitted to many cabs. We understand from the maker that its accessory is also being adopted to a great extent by the various omnibus companies in London, who are relying solely upon the Pyrene extinguisher for protection against outbreaks of fire.

Terry's Tire Gauges and Clutch Spring-insets.

It has been proved from time to time by extensive tests and experiments that the maximum length of life of a pneumatic tire cannot be obtained unless the tire and rim fit accurately together. It is interesting to note in this respect that Herbert Terry and Sons. Ltd:, the well-known spring manufacturer, which concern, it may be recalled, is official gauge-maker to the S.M.M.T., is now turning out a number ef gauge's applicable to all tire rims now on the market.

These gauges should prove a valuable possession to the commercial-vehicle user, as they enable him to ascertain whether undue wear is taking place on any particular tire, and whether or not it is due to incorrect fitting of the tires. They are also clearly marked with the tolerances allowed, and are supplied in sets of 24. Either full sets or a single gauge can be obtained from the maker, Herbert Terry and Sons, Ltd., Redcliteh. This concern has just sent to us examples of a neat fitting it is marketing, which it is claimed will prevent theslutch exhibiting signs of fierceness or slipping. It consists of a short slip of spring steel, curved slightly, which is inserted beneath the leather. This raises the leather, so that it gives an easy camber, and ensures a sweet and full engagement.

The Supply of Spare Parts.

A short treatise has just been issued by Bariniar, Ltd., of 10, Poland Street, Oxford Street, London, W., on its general machine work. It explains how obsolete designs of cylinders, pistons, and other component parts, can be supplied at short. notice. Now that there is a s.hortage in the supply of spare parts for many vehicles, ancluKtmg those of some Continental makes, this pamphlet should be particularly useful. A request to the company, mentioning this paper, will bring a copy by return of post.

The Coventry Chuck.

When it can be said of an article, such as a lathe chuck, that not one has ever broken in use, further recommendation should be unnecessary ; these circumstances apply to the Coventry Chuck, manufactured by Alfred Herbert, Ltd., Coventry. The great i strength of this chuck, which s actually guaranteed against breakage, is due to the careful selection of material and consistent check on its quality, the super-excellence of design, and the special treatment of the steels employed. In the latter respect, it should be pointed out that the only perishable parts are the soft jaws provided for second-operation work. This admirable accessory is manufactured in six sizes, and is suitable for automatic, capstan, and turret lathes, as well as the engine-type machine tool
