Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

air photograph of a tyre assembly ge (CM Jam ary 24) after a tyre and ieel assembly had burst, prompts a to write to you about something lich I feel gives cause for concern for e safety of certain motor trade staff. During my employment I visit a large mber of vehicle operators, many of iich utilize the on-the-site services 'ered by the large tyre service 3ups, which have blossomed over e past 10 years or so. An operative n arrive on site in a van complete th a compressor, various skilfully signed levers and the all-important ib hammer, and change a set of mmercial vehicle tyres in a time lich is nothing short of miraculous mpared with the time it took me to the job a decade ago.

To get to the point of my letter, none the vans that I have seen belonging any one of the tyre groups has been upped with a cage to put the tyre d wheel assembly into while it is ing inflated. One can see the opera e leaning over the wheel clubbing ) flange into place while it is being inflated. Are these young men foolhardy or is it just a case of ignorance is bliss!

I sincerely hope that I am not witness to an incident where a rim disembowels somebody due to lack of training and/or facilities.

It would be interesting to hear from Tim Hoare what safety precautions were preached at the course he recently attended (CM January 3) and what the comments are from the management of the various companies operating this type of service.

[A major distributor assures us that portable tyre cages are available and are carried on service vehicles. The difficulty is, of course, whether or not the operative uses the cage. The distributor we spoke to tries to clamp down hard on anyone it finds not using the cage provided As a result more of its fitters are now doing so. Ed]
