Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ALTHOUGH passenger travel in 1973 increased by a further four per cent, public service vehicle mileage fell during the year. This is revealed by the DoE's report Passenger Transport in Great Britain 1973, published last week.

The report, which contains detailed statistics on passenger travel by rail, car and air as well as psv, shows that the main passenger mileage increase was by private car. Between 1963 and 1973 private transport's share of passenger movement rose by 64 per cent to 80 per cent. Over the same period rail and psv fares rose by more than 100 per cent. Running costs of motor vehicles rose by 54 per cent.

In 1973 the number of psv rose by about 1,500 to 74,402.
