Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

WHAT I believe to be the first allBritish rotary snowplough is now in. use by at least 20 authorities. This is the Croker Sno-Blo, of which there are two models. A 7-ft.-wide cutting head is fitted to the No. 8436, which is operated by a Lister 40 h.p. air-cooled engine and is designed for attachment to the operating arms of any front-end loader with a lifting•capacity of more than 191 cwt. The larger model, No. 101, has an 8-ft. 6-in. cutting head and is driven by a Perkins 6.354 diesel engine, in this case a frontend loader with a lifting capacity of at least 31 cwt. being required.

The entire power from the respective units is, of course, available to the blower head, being transmitted through an integral over-centre clutch. Use of an independent engine means that its maximum r.p.m. can be applied to ploughing, irrespective of the travelling conditions. The fact that the ploughing head can be elevated on the loading arms assists in dealing with deep drifts layer by layer. Where the snow is shallower a continuous run may be made with the plough skids resting on the road surface. The Sno-Blo's twin discharge chutes may be turned so as to clear either to the left or right and may be locked in any position.

Really for Anything

FIRE brigades today carry everincreasing responsibilities and their more modern appliances provide for the whole range of emergencies from kittens stuck in tall trees to major industrial disasters. A tender recently put into operation by Scotland's South Eastern Fire Brigade carries 1,001 pieces of rescue equipment. extending from a 10 kW generator, with powerful floodlights, to an air compres

sor to recharging breathing apparatus cylinde s. The intention is that it shall operat as a mobile headquarters which can be used by the police, civil defence and m ical services, as well as the fire brigad , at times of serious emergency. The tender has been built by Merry. weather and Sons Ltd. on an A.E.C. Mercury chassis.

Muck Shifter

AS all who have ever helped to prepare for an official visit to any establishment , will know, the preceding clean-up process is something terrific. One who certainly appreciates this situation is the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Alderman R. C. Rodgers. At the North Western dinner of the Institute of Transport he recounted how whilst touring one plant he spoke to an elderly worker, asking what his job was:

" All shifts the muck Out," came the reply.

"And does that keep you busy?" queried the Lord Mayor.

" Ah don't mind tellin' thee, there ain't 'arf been some muck shifted round 'ere since they sknew you was comin'," was the response.
