The rates sub-committee of A.R.O. Southern Area has decided to use The Commercial Motor Tables of Operating Costs as a basis for stabilizing rates in the area. This announcement was made at a meeting of the Slough subarea, on Monday, when S.T.R., The Commercial Motor costs expert, gave a lecture. He explained the percentages that should be added to cost figures to arrive at fair rates.

On Wednesday, S.T.R. lectured to the Nottingham and District Industrial Traffic Club on the subject of " Some Controversial Aspects of Costing Considered in Relation to the Operation of Motor Vehicles." He used as the basis of discussion The Commercial Motor Tables of Operating Costs.

62 Members' Summonses Defended.

During the past 12 months, 62

• police-court summonses were defended on beharf of members of A.R.O. Metropolitan Area, under the defence scheme inaugurated by the area committee. In addition to the City courts, there are 13 police courts covered by this scheme.

Under a more recent arrangement, operated through the members' insurances, free legal defence is .given throughout the Metropolitan Area.

Licence-holders' Conduct of. Growing Importance.

That the conduct of licence-holders was a matter of which much more would be heard in the future was the view expressed by Mr. S. Preece, C.1V1.U.A, organizer for the Manchester and Liverpool areas, at a meeting in Hanley, on Monday. Mr. J. L. Kinder, national organizer, spoke on developments of C.M.U.A. work.
