Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE TRANSPORT & General Workers Union (T&G) began a series of one-day strikes at an Iceland depot last week (8 December) and immediately branded the behaviour of security guards at the site as "brutal".

The Enfield, Middlesex depot is run by contractor DHL-Exel, which employs the striking drivers and warehouse workers.

The T&G says the strike was called because an imposed 2.4% pay rise was toofar short of the 4% its members want, particularly after a pay freeze last year. The security guards brought in by the company were described as "thugs" by one picket. The union claimed that one of its members, a 63-yearold man, had been assaulted; it is pressing for a prosecution.

Peter Kavanagh, T&G senior regional organiser, says: "It all turned very nasty and we were pleased when the local constabulary turned up to calm things down." Iceland says one picket at Enfield "was removed after attempting to tamper with one of the vehicles"; it claims the guards had simply "removed the picketer to safety'.

The union has a second oneday strike planned at the depot tomorrow (15 December); this is due to be followed by further strikes on Thursday 21 and Friday 22 December.
