AN OPERATOR WHO allowed an employee to drive a 40-tonne artic on a licence that expired four years earlier has been ordered to pay 000 in fines and costs by the Hertford magistrates.

Raymond Severn, trading as Severn Transport, had denied permitting an unqualified driver to drive a vehicle, but was found guilty.

Prosecuting for Vosa, Anthony Ostrin said the vehicle was stopped in a roadside check while being driven by Barry Beavis,of Upininsterliaffic examiner Jeremiah Gleeson checked the DVLA database and discovered Beavis's LGV licence had expired four years before.

He established that Severn was the operator and wrote asking him to explain the position hut the letter was ignored.

Denying that he had permitted Beavis to drive the vehicle when not the holder of the correct driving licence, Severn said he understood Beavis had the appropriate licence and claimed to have seen it.

He was fined £300 with £600 costs and his solicitors were ordered to pay a further £200 in wasted costs for not having appeared on a previous occasion.

Beavis was fined £100 for not having the relevant LGV licence, £300 for having no insurance and £50 for failing to inform the DVLA that he had changed address. In addition his licence was endorsed with three penalty points.
