EASTBOURNE BOROUGH Council has advised operators to re-route their deliveries and park in Hastings from February 2007 because it has sold its truck park to property developers.
The Wartling Road Coach and Lorry Park has been sold for £4.5m to Wimpey, which intends to build houses and flats on the site. The council says that 30% of these will be sold to a'social' landlord to help bridge the affordable housing gap in Eastbourne.
A council spokeswoman says haulage firms in the area have been informed of the closure and advised to use other places in Sussex to park up from February. She confirms that the nearest truck park is a 30-minute drive away in Hastings.
"We have been talking about selling the site for seven or eight years,-she adds." It was just getting the right developers to come along and submit the plans. We're advising haulage firms to re-route their deliveries so they don't end up in Eastbourne."
The spokeswoman adds that Initial City Link parks two of its vehicles on the site almost every day; the council has to yet to hear from the company what it intends to do.
