Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Drivers, drivers, drivers. Possibly tho biggest problem facing the haulage sector in the medium to long term. Many now recognise this and many (including CM with its Driver Drive 2001 campaign) are trying to do something about it. But there's one hurdle we simply have to cross before the problem can be properly addressed—the attitude of the hauliers themselves.

Looking for drivers with at least two years' experience makes sense under normal conditions. You get the security of knowing they're used to handling a truck, can take the hours and know what's involved in the job. But in an environment where drivers are in short supply, and where that shortage is getting worse, leaving less experienced drivers to one side means they'll never get that vital experience, so they'll never be employable.

As the pool of experienced drivers continues to diminish, the industry needs to recruit all the new blood it can get. But unless it's willing to recruit, train AND employ them, there's no point. Simply finding people willing to be truck drivers is not enough; you've also got to be willing to give them the job— whatever the initial inconveniences might be.

• From next week's bumper Christmas issue, CM'S cover price goes up by Lop to ii.5o. We've held off the increase for as long as possible (it's well over two years sin° the last one) but finally had to succumb to some straightforward commercial pressures. Despite this increase, we hope you agree that CM still represents excellent value for money. What else can you buy for £1.50 to help keep you profitable, professional and legal, all year round
