A new initiative in Northern Ireland si In Northern Ireland, government agencies have worked with the Road Haulage Association and individual hauliers to fill driving vacancies through a programme called Bridge to Employment.
The Training & Employment Agency, in conjunction with Transport Training Services, has incorporated the government's New Deal scheme into a programme designed specifically for the road haulage industry.
Applicants were asked to contact the individual hauliers and, if successful, were offered employment and a two-week training programme for a category C licence (HGV Class 2). After six weeks' experience, a further one-week training programme could take applicants to category C+E (HGV Class 1).
Hauliers participating in the initial scheme included Ross Thompson, Newry, Dukes Transport, Portadown; James McGeehan &Sons, Draperstown; McConnell Removals, Newtownabbey; Oliver Transport Services, Castlerock; William Allen & Sans, Moira; PJO'Kane, Garvagh; Polar International, Newry; Maine Soft Drinks, Ballymoney; Fegan Transport, Gifford; Mallusk Cold Storage, Newtownabbey; Rea Distribution, Ballyclare; WT Waite & Sons, Moira; Interpoint Distribution, Bessbrook; and BP McKeefry, Swatragh.
