Police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who struck a scooter and left the rider to die in the middle of a motorway. The incident happened near Junction 16 on the southbound carriageway

of the M40 at about 06:15hrs on 30 October. Warwickshire police say that scuff marks prove the driver stopped to move the smashed bike from under his rig, but then fled the scene. The scooter rider, Ron Cobblediek, was left sprawled on the carriageway, only to be hit again by four unsuspecting trucks and a van.

CCTV footage shows a Volvo FL? or FL10 artic with a red and blue cab and white container travelling about 27 seconds behind the scooter. Accident investigators have calculated that the truck would have caught up with the bike at the precise point of the colision.

Leading the investigation, Inspector Timmins says: 'The vehicle stands out, as not only did it have a roof light on the cap of the cab but it also had some kind of illuminated sign across the grille.

'We are anxious to find this driver for the family's sake. This was a very callous act. We didn't get a call for 20 minutes after the accident—Ron Cobbledick didn't stand a chance."
