Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Many truck drivers are expected to turn a blind eye to a campaign urging them to give way to coaches when driving in middle lane of motorways.

From 1 January, coaches will be banned from the outside lane of all UK motorways but will be allowed to do 65mph-9mph faster than trucks.

Michael Bartlett of the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK, which is behind the campaign, says few people are aware of the change. "We are asking truck drivers to move into the inside lane as soon as it is safe if they see a coach behind them," he says. "This will make for a safer journey for all concerned and will mean that passengers will reach their destinations on time."

But Burton on Trent-based owner driver Stephen Gee predicts the central lane will become so clogged with extra traffic that few drivers will be prepared to give way.

"If there is time, most drivers will pull in, but it can often take so long to get back into the middle lane that they will ignore drivers flashing them from behind," he says.

Dave Hillman, director of R Hillman Transport in Chelwood, Bristol says it will be difficult to persuade the drivers of his ninevehicle fleet to support the campaign: "I leave motorway driving to their discretion," he says. "Obviously I look at the tacho to see nothing silly is going on, but as soon as they go out the door they're own their own and it's no use me telling what they can or cannot do."
