Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

HOW much waste mileage is run by new vehicles before delivery, is a question now being asked by a prominent Lancashire passenger-transport operator, writes a " C M." representative. One of his company's coaches was requisitioned by the military authorities and, having essential work to perform, he obtained a permit to acquire a new machine. To his astonishment he discovered that the official arrangements were for the Bedford chassis to be sent to Scotland for the body to be fitted. The distance from his company's garage to the bodybuilding works is something well over 200 miles and he is informed that the

delivery charges will be Is. 6d. per mile.

As the same type of body is being built at a Leeds works, only 30 miles away, the operator wants to know why petrol, driver's time, and money should be wasted in sending the chassis over the Border and bringing the vehicle back again. In view of the need for conserving man-power and petrol he is also wondering how far away the customers allotted to the Leeds works are situated. Are they all nearer than he is? The Amalgamated Horse and Motor Owners' Association has taken up the matter with the Ministry of War Transport.
