BECAUSE of the sluirtag# of men and youths; a Dewsbury haulage concern it employing women as wagon"watchers on vehicles delivering in London. This step has been taken following a recent London robbery in which cloth valued at about 41,000 was stolen. The cloth, comprising nearly 50 parcels, was being distributed from the company's London depot to various consignees by an unaccompanied driver with a 6-ton lorry.

We cannot always send an extra man, youths are also very difficult to find for the job, so we a.e employing women."

Mr. Jackson, who is hon. stcretary of the Heavy Woollen District Trrisport Association, suggested it would be a good thing if some scheme could be evolved whereby hauliers could contribute to a mutual fund for the provision of protection against pilferage, at any rate on those trunk roads where it is rife. " I would welcome a Government scheme pn those lines, to give us special police protection, or some other form of guard," he added.
