LANCASIHRE County Council has a by-law for the regulation of the display of advertisements and the erection of hoardiugs in some of the districts in the county. A schedule was prepared some time ago, but, owing to the war and other circumstances, no action has been taken. Scheduled advertisements, however, have recently been inspected by a committee, which proposes to order removal in certain cases, and, in default, proceedings will be taken to enforce the. by-laws.
The committee reports that in mak B24 ing its reccnumendations it had strictly in view the disfigurement of the landscape, and has ignored the hoardings and advertisements in the villages.
• In nearly every case where removal is demanded the advertisement disfigures the scenery as viewed from the highway.
• It is fully realized that, under modern traffic conditions, the provision of garages has become a necessity, but it is regrettable that so many unsightly notices should be displayed by the proprieto'rs of the garages advertising petrol, • motor tyres, etc. It is the beauty of the Lake District which attracts people. and those who cater for the visitors will have no reasonable cause for complaint if the county council requires them to pay proper regard. to the amenities of the district.
It is thought that, without, resorting to prosecutions, something might be done to improve matters if an appeal were made to the landowners and proprietors of garages, and the committee has asked some members of the county council to see what can be done to effect this end.
