While the ever-increasing cost of operating a transport business has been a constant in the past 30 years for AK Worthington, one area that has also been a struggle is getting the right employees. Richards admits there is a shortage of skilled drivers and a whole generation who feel that for the challenges they would face on the road the “job is not rewarding enough”.

Richards has implemented a 24/7 culture at AK Worthington that sees staff work to three eight-hour shifts in an attempt to meet the needs of the company with the work/life balance of its employees, but says there is still a shortage of people entering the industry.
