While the ever-increasing cost of operating a transport business has been a constant in the past 30 years for AK Worthington, one area that has also been a struggle is getting the right employees. Richards admits there is a shortage of skilled drivers and a whole generation who feel that for the challenges they would face on the road the “job is not rewarding enough”.
Richards has implemented a 24/7 culture at AK Worthington that sees staff work to three eight-hour shifts in an attempt to meet the needs of the company with the work/life balance of its employees, but says there is still a shortage of people entering the industry.
“The smaller haulier still works as he did 30 to 40 years ago and this is not going to attract people coming in from school or university. You have to look at the hours and the cleanliness of the job.”
