Logistics firm Wincanton has signed a ground-breaking agreement with transport unions for Europe-wide representation. Jennifer Ball reports.

WINCANTON AND transport trade unions from across the EU, including the UK's Transport and General Workers' Union, have reached an agreement for a European Works Council.

The council will bring together representatives from all Wincanton's European operations to discuss pan-European legislation including the Working Time Directive and digital tachographs, as well as issues like depot closures.

Ron Webb, the T&G's national secretary for transport, says: "We are extremely pleased that after 18 months of negotiations we have been able to reach agreement on a good European Works Council agreement.

This will allow for proper consultation to take place at the highest level within Wincanton, and it is a step forward for workers in this country who will have a stronger voice," he adds.

A spokesman for Wincanton says: "We are delighted to reach this agreement and believe that we are the first UK plc to forma council which includes members from the accession states of Hungary. Poland and Slovakia. It will hold its first meeting in the autumn."
