CommercialMolor had a one-to-one interview with Ivor Callely, who became Junior Transport Minister last October with special responsibility for road transport.

As we revealed in last week's CM (7 April) Callely admits that the WM regulations, which came into force in the UK on 4 April, are some way from being implemented in Ireland, with local discussions among the parties still ongoing.

Ireland is not alone in being unable to meet the EU deadline, but Callely says it wants to comply as soon as possible, although he admits there are still issues to iron out: "[If] someone is gainfully employed and delays have not been foreseen [then] we will have to accommodate that."

Callely is considering reviewing speed limits upwards for HGVs on Irish motorways. At present the limit is 80km/h (50mph). The IRHA is pressing for 90km/h (56mph); the same as the UK.

He is sympathetic to a fuel rebate for essential users, but said it is not within his remit. "It is up to the Department of Finance and my department officials."

On enforcement, he is proud of the newly dedicated traffic corps which he is introducing within the 12,000 strong garda force. "However we are not taking away the role of enforcement on the nation's roads from any of our ordinary police," he concluded.

Callely feels that successful enforcement is dependent upon a healthy partner ship with industry.
