TWO MORE drivers employed by Isle of Anglesey-based Gwynedd Transport have been fined for drivers' hours and tachograph offences resulting from Operation Mona.

When Alun Jones of Bodedern appeared before the Gwynedd magistrates he pleaded guilty to four offences of exceeding 41/2 hours' driving without taking the required 45min break and one offence of failing to use a tachograph chart.

He was fined a total of £600 with £65 costs.

John Gwyn Owen, of Bethesda, pleaded guilty to five offences of exceeding 41/2 hours' driving without taking the required break; one of exceeding the daily driving limit; one of failing to use a tacho chart and one of failing to return tacho charts to the company within 21 days.

He was fined a total of £350 with £75 costs. Traffic examiner Geoffrey Whitley said Jones had driven for as long as 6hr 22min with only a 15-minute break. There was also a discrepancy of 50km on a journey from Deeside to the Tushingham area. The outwardjourney accounted for only 80km, while the return journey accounted for 130km. When interviewed, Jones had said he had forgotten to put a card in.

He had previously worked as a shunter and claimed to have been sent down the road without any real experience.

Whitley said Owen had driven for as long as 7hr 10min with only a 23min break;on one occasion he had driven for 11hr 20min in a day. Odometer readings on one chart showed a distance of 54km on a journey from Bethesda to Holyhead, while the distance trace accounted for only 45km.

Five of the company's other drivers were ordered to pay fines and costs of £2,855 at earlier hearings (CM 24 February) — another five have still to appear before magistrates.
