e The uncertainty, indicated in last week's CM as to whether the United Road Transport Union was to remain registered under the Industrial Relations Act, was cleared up at the special meeting of key officials held in Manchester last Friday.
A statement to the effect that the executive committee of the 28,000-strong union had decided to de-register immediately, and that a letter to this effect would be sent this week to the Chief Registrar of Trade Unions and Employers' Associations, was put out after the meeting.
Any fears that the Bakers' Union, which de-registered and then re-registered, would poach members from the URTU, many of whose members are involved in bakery distribution, appear unfounded. A spokesman for the URTU confirmed to CM that it held the sole negotiating rights for distribution workers in five Bakers' federations covering most of the country and the Bakers' union would not be able to negotiate on behalf of these members.
