A..AgLi A CTIVITY in the building and allied trades is an important factor in the prosperity of a large number of road-haulage contractors. This is a time of the year when the building trade improves. As much as can be done in the way of advising hauliers of pending contracts is done on this page. Readers should, however, appreciate the importance of keeping their eyes open for local developments.

Builders urgently require supplies of bricks, and it is said that the manufacturers are finding it difficult to keep up with the demand. The boom in building is -reported to be almost as intense as it was a few years ago.

Activity in the drapery, clothing, and tailoring business is still increasing, and not even the passage of Easter is likely greatly to affect it.

The threatened prohibition of the importation of goods from Russia may make a considerable difference to the haulage industry in the direction of its activities, if not in the actual bulk of business done. This will be particularly noticeable in respect of timber haulage.

North-East Coast

Chester-le-Street -Council is to build 75 houses at Houghton Gate.

H. Kindred, Sunniside, Newcastle-onTyne. is to build 60 houses at Dunston for Whickham Council. .

East Anglia.

The position in the boot and shoe trade is good, according to Norwich factories. J: W. Greethain, Seaview Road, Skegness, is to build houses for the Boston authority, whilst Ipswich Town . Council is to build a School of Arts and Crafts.

Lancashire and Cheshire.

A new factory has been acquired at Farnworth, near Widnes, for the manufacture of soap. Several canning faatories also are to be built in Lancashire in the near future. Business in leather remains steady. Macclesfield Council is to spend nearly £40,000 in the erection of houses at Moss Lane.

Yorkshire, The spinning section of the woollen Industry is increasingly active. In the piece goods section, too, business is increasing, especially for deliveries in the home markets. ' Business done in the leather markets at Leeds remains steady and good.

Middlesbrough Council proposes to build 190 houses in Tees Bridge Road. OEfull Council is to build a new coach station and garage at Ferensway. In Leeds important building plans include the erection of a cinema at Middleton, a factory at Lupton Avenue for Mr. W. Jowitt, and a large building for the Leeds Co-operative Society at Scott Hall Road.

A new school is to be built at Whinney Banks, Middlesbrough. Rochdale is to have a new school at Greenhill. Rotherham Town Council is considering extensive alterations to the abat toir ; also plans for a church at Cambridge Street.

Midlands.

Business in the hosiery and lace trades is for the moment patchy. It behoves hauliers interested in this line to be on the qui vive. Knitted outerwear is the best section, and the curtain section of the lace trade is also: active.

Trade in the potteries is gradually increasing and the outlook is more settled than for some time past. In the boot and slide trade orddrs are reported to be on the increase in. practically every factory in the Midlands.

A Birmingham firm have taken a site with the intention of building a new factory for the manufacture. of wringers and washing machines. Trade in galvanized hollow-ware is good ; also that in chromium fittings.

'Messrs. Barker and Son, Loughborough, are to erect 50 houses in the parishes of Appleby. Coleorton, and 'Worthington for the Ashby-de-la-Zouch Rural District Council. Dickinson and Holford, Ltd., of Walsall, is to build 89 houses in Proffitt Street, Walsall, for the town council. The Birmingham Education Committee is considering a number of building proposals of interest. including the erection of a new school on the Wesley Castle Estate, structural alterations and additions to Flope Street and Tindal Street council schools ; also the erection of a junior day technical

school at Bordesley Green. Kidderminster Buildings Committee has under consideration plans for 40 houses and a theatre.

Scotland.

There are signs of a tendency for Scottish tweeds to become more popu

lar. Inquiries are being received and trade is likely to improve. Messrs. W. McGee and Sons, 29, Greenhill Road, Paisley, are to do the brickwork in connection with the ere& tion of 104 tenement houses at West Drumoyne housing extension for Glasgow Corporation.

Wales.

Messrs. J. Morgan and Sons, Neath, have secured contracts totalling over £60,000 for works in connection with housing schemes at Aberavon, Margam and Cwmavon. A new hospital to cost nearly £230,000 is to be built at Sully, Glam. Swansea Town Council has approved plans for 120 houses, to be built on the Sketty Park Estate.

West Country. '

Boot and 'shoe manufacturers in Bristol and district report that Ma.kth was a good month and that trade is still improving. The leather trade reflects the activity of the boot and shoe industry.

London and Home Counties.

Imports of' rayon hose and similar materials provide loads from the docks. Several factories are being built in the East End of London for the manufacture of clothing. The Bata shoe factory at Tilbury is new completed. G. Walker and Slater, Ltd., is to erect houses in Leighton Road for St. Pancras Borough Council. Pitchers, Ltd., Hornsey Road, Hornsey,_is to build a school at Lucas Street, Stepney. Twickenham Town Council has passed plans for a number of buildings, including 186 houses, to be erected for Hilbury Chaplin, Ltd., in Nelson Road. Camberwell Borough Council is considering a proposal to build a new town hall, so also is Barking Council.

National Housing Development, Ltd., is to build 120 houses on the Meadowbank Estate, Dorking. The school premises at Bridge Road, Grays, Essex, are to be considerably extended. It is proposed to build a school in the Redden Court area between Harold Wood and Arelleigh Green. Hendon Connell has passed plans for nearly 50 houses in the Harrow Weald district, and Hendon Council is awaiting only the sanction of the Ministry of Health before going ahead with considerable extensions to the isolation hospital.

Ilford Council has passed plans for 260 houses to be built in its district. Middlesex County Council is recommended to approve an estimate of f.13,860 for the adaptation of Percy House 'Schools, Isleworth, for the accommodation of able-bodied institutional inmates. It is proposed to alter and enlarge Roe Green Council School, Kingsbury. Portsmouth is proposing to spend E17,600 on conAruction of a central depot at Eastern Road. Plans have been prepared for an extension to Portsmouth Cathedral.

Ashford Builders Co., Ltd., Ashford, Middlesex, is to build a library at Chelmsford.
