A substance called Pernax, better known for its insulating properties than for the characteristics that make it suitable for other than electrical purposes, is now being utilized by its maker, Croydon Cable Works, Ltd., Mitcham Road, Croydon, as a material for the wings of commercial vehicles.

Being unbreakable, springy, waterproof, durable and easily moulded, yet, when treated with bituminous paint, capable of receiving a glossy finish, the composition seems well suitable to such use. Moreover, we understand that Pernax wings cost less than the conventional metal type.

Welding Engineers' Meeting.

A meeting of the Institution of Welding Engineers will be held at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Storey's Gate, St. James's Park, London, S.W.1, on Wednesday, April 19, at 7.45 p.m., when three films, depicting (1) automatic metal arc welding, (2) automatic flash butt (resistance) welding, and (3) oxy-acetylene welding, will be exhibited.

A Rrupp Rail Coach.

The Krupp Co., of Essen, is the latest German concern to take up the construction of rail coaches on the lines of road vehicles. The Krupp 30-passenger coach is mounted on a pair of fourwheeled bogies, only one of which is driven by a 60 h.p. two-cylindered aircooled engine located in the centre of the chassis. The vehicle, which is stated to he able to attain a speed of 47 m.p.h., has an overall length of 28 ft. 9 ins, and a width of 8 ft. 9 ins.
